Mounting foam guns

Mounting foam guns are needed everytime you need to seal, fill or insulate. Good quality equipment allows you to apply the right amount of material, and above all, ergonomic work. Choosing the right gun only seems easy. In this guide, we discuss the most important issues that will help you make it consciously.

What should you pay attention to when choosing a foam gun?

The system that prevents the foam from drying is crucial - thanks to it you can completely block the flow regulation and, as a result, use the container with mounting foam within 20 days from its installation. Importantly, you do not need to clean the equipment during this time.

Lightness - is ensured by the use of an aluminum alloy. A light gun allows the application of foam in hard-to-reach places.

Ergonomics and comfort of use - pay attention to what the handle is covered with and how the tool lies in your hand.

The possibility to adjust the foam stream - mentioned earlier, definitely facilitates the work. Thanks to it, you don't have to keep pressure on the gun trigger.

Materials - look for foam guns made of non-corrosive materials. Remember that foam itself is an aggressive agent. And if the tool is left at the construction site, it must be resistant to adverse conditions, including rain.

What is your foam gun made of?

You will recognize a good mounting foam gun by the materials used in the production process. We recommend purchasing a tool with components made of non-corrosive metals or suitable alloys - copper, aluminum, or brass. It is also advisable that the possibly large surface of the gun is covered with a layer of nickel or Teflon - this is not only additional protection against rust but also makes cleaning the equipment at every stage of the work child's play:

  • body - the durability of the whole foam gun depends on it. Virtually all PRO products have bodies made of aluminum and are additionally nickel-plated (e.g. PRO BT-01T, PRO BT-07) or Teflon-coated (e.g. PRO BT-06).
  • foam gun trigger - the trigger mechanism should also be coated with Teflon (PRO BT-04)or nickel-plated (PRO BT-05).Thanks to this, you can easily clean the elements from foam residues compared to inferior quality plastic trigger foam guns.
  • check valve, nozzle, and needle - they should be made of brass or copper and additionally coated with Teflon - after all, these are elements that are in direct contact with the mounting foam. PRO products are made of the materials mentioned above, and nozzles in some models are made of reliable nickel-plated brass or stainless steel.
  • adapter - necessarily made of aluminum, ideally, if it is coated with Teflon.
  • stream regulation knob - should be coated with Teflon.
  • handle - the PRO offer includes tools with one-component and two-component handles. The handle should be ergonomic and non-slip coated to ensure that the gun fits perfectly in the hand.

Handling and usage of the mounting foam gun

The foam applicator will allow you to seal and install doors and windows, fill gaps in the insulation, additionally insulate partitions, etc. Shake the container before mounting the gun. After removing the cover and levering the plug, screw the container into the gun until you meet resistance. In the process, you will hear a characteristic hiss. Remember that the container should be upside down when screwing in. During preparation, some foam may leak out and cover some parts of the gun.

The applicator should have a stream regulation system - you can be sure that the selected place will be covered with the appropriate amount of foam. The lack of this mechanism is associated with the need to immediately remove its excess. Those skilled in the art recommend that sealing and insulating follow two main principles. Start at the bottom of the rift or at the deepest point. This allows the holes to fill evenly.

Cleaning the foam gun after work

Regular cleaning will ensure that the tool will serve you for many years. Remember to perform appropriate maintenance after each use. Otherwise, there is a risk of clogging the nozzle. Make sure you have the appropriate polyurethane foam cleaner. It is a mistake to use water or household cleaners - these can accelerate the hardening of the mounting foam! We recommend the use of suitable and intended products for a specific purpose. Work with the applicator and its maintenance should be carried out with protective gloves.

How to clean the foam gun?

  1. Unscrew the empty container.
  2. Squeeze the trigger a few times to empty as much foam from the inside of the device as possible. A piece of cloth will come in handy as the scraps will fall out. Clean the surface of the gun from foam residue.
  3. Screw the container with the cleaner into the adapter and press the trigger. The cleaning agent will fill the tool and dissolve any foam residue. Leave the gun for approx. 10 minutes.
  4. After this time, squeeze the trigger to fully deflate the applicator.
