Construction square - choose the best one

Every professional construction worker should have at least one square in his toolbox in addition to good quality spirit levels. You probably don't need to prove to anyone that precise determination of a right angle in construction is the basis, regardless of whether foundations are being laid, construction or finishing works are being carried out. Another very important application of this tool is assistance in technical acceptance of buildings. Then it is used to verify possible deviations in the premises. What to look for when buying an angle iron? How to choose the one that best suits your needs? Read the article below.

In the beginning, it is necessary to mention the squares functioning on the market, the name of which is used interchangeably with construction squares. This is a mistake in naming because squares are completely different measuring tools that are used in most craft or renovation works. The PRO company offers both squares and construction squares. It is worth getting acquainted with this wide range.

What are the types of construction squares?

The PRO offers includes squares for various uses. Can distinguish:

  • rugged square for construction - they are based on a rectangular profile, which makes them look a bit like classic screeding levels,
  • rugged construction square - they are characterized by an unusual, trapezoidal shape, thanks to which it is possible to level corners in rooms,
  • construction squares for finishing works - they have specific features, e.g. a cut corner or additional reinforcement.
Professional construction square... or what?

When choosing a construction square, first of all, pay attention to the profile from which it is made. It should be durable on the one hand and light on the other. Rigidity is often achieved through massive ribbing in the profile, and durability is enhanced by a design with an intact middle chamber. Such profiles are used in classic PRO brand spirit levels, but also in construction squares made on their basis.

For the square to serve us for a long time, it must be properly secured in the most critical place, i.e. in the right angle where two profiles connect. The PRO construction squares are reinforced with composite material - it permanently connects and stiffens the profiles. Only this ensures that after time the construction square still indicates an angle not smaller, not larger, but exactly 90°.

PRO manufactures aluminum construction squares - powder coated or anodized, thanks to which they are lightweight and resistant to corrosion.

powder-coated construction squares anodized models
very popular among bricklayers, they are chosen where the employee does not have to worry about leaving marks on the working surface after using the tool, it can leave traces; the advantage here is the color of the angle iron, which is visible on the construction site

used for finishing and renovation works, they do not leave marks on the working surface, anodizing stiffens the profile even more, and the surface is more slippery, which makes it easier to keep it clean

Indicators, i.e. classic bubble vials, are also mounted in some constructions squares. The principle of their placement is similar to that of the PRO spirit levels - ease of reading is important. These elements are made of the highest quality acrylic glass, very accurate, and the unique design makes the gas bubble optically enlarged. Interestingly, the result can be easily read regardless of the viewing angle.

In the case of a construction square with a bubble vial, we have an additional reference point that assures us during the measurement that the angle is as expected. Most often, two bubble vials are mounted - one for the vertical and one for the horizontal.

Who uses construction squares with bubble vials daily? Most often, plasterers and tilers have to take care of maintaining a right angle in the corners, as well as when installing plaster strips.

It is worth considering whether the construction square we have is to be equipped with a foot. Such models allow you to hook one of the sides to the material being processed. Thus, you can easily trace a right angle, as well as easily cut the material. It is enough to apply the saw and perfectly cut the selected section at a right angle. A square with a foot is an extremely useful element when marking, as it facilitates setting lines when working on furniture elements and the implementation of roof trusses.

In finishing works, construction squares with a cut corners are also used. Checking the right angle is very difficult when the corners are uneven or when there is acrylic or silicone in them. A specially designed angle iron will cope with this type of task.
